What we believe

We seek to follow the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, with the Bible as our guide for life.

The church is a community of people

We believe the church is made up of people who gather in Jesus’ name to worship God and live out their faith, whether in a home or elsewhere. Jesus said he is present where two or three gather in his name. The building is a meeting place; the people are the church.

In the Bible: (Portuguese) Matthew 18:20Romans 16:3–5

Salvation is in Jesus Christ

We believe in Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again. Salvation is found in him. A church name, a denomination or membership in an organization cannot save anyone.

In the Bible: (Portuguese) Acts 4:121 Corinthians 15:3–4

The Bible guides our faith

We believe the Scriptures are inspired by God and guide what we teach and how we live. We encourage everyone to read, ask questions and examine teachings in light of the Bible.

In the Bible: (Portuguese) 2 Timothy 3:16–17Acts 17:11

Unity with Christians from other churches

We recognize Christians from other churches and congregations as brothers and sisters in Christ, with equal dignity before God. No one needs to belong to our community to be recognized as a Christian. We do not consider ourselves the only Christians or superior to other followers of Jesus.

In the Bible: (Portuguese) 1 Corinthians 1:2, 10–13

Loving God and our neighbor

Jesus taught us to love God and our neighbor, and said that his disciples would be known by their love. We seek to live this out through respect, hospitality and practical help for those who need food or clothing.

In the Bible: (Portuguese) Mark 12:29–31John 13:34–35James 2:14–17

Baptism and new life in Christ

We believe baptism is a response of faith and obedience to Jesus. The Bible connects it with repentance and the forgiveness of sins, and with being united with Christ in his death and resurrection so that we may live a new life.

In the Bible: (Portuguese) Acts 2:38Romans 6:3–5
